Mahall's

Founded in 1924 by John K. Mahall, Mahall’s started out as a dance hall, before adding a confectionery store then a barbershop. It’s latest — and longest running — iteration is as a restaurant and bowling alley. Prior to its first and only change of ownership in 2012, the establishment was passed down through three Mahall generations — with each family at some point living in the apartment above.

Mahall’s occupies a unique and distinctive section of Lakewood’s Birdtown neighborhood – initially built to house Union Carbide and Standard Oil (mostly immigrant) workers. There, Mahall’s 20 Lanes appealed to the close-knit community and business thrived for decades.

The Roxy

Mahall’s is proud to announce the opening of a new auditorium-sized venue this Fall called The Roxy – paying homage to the dance hall of the same name that thrived in this space during the 1920s and 30s. Built sustainably using repurposed materials from the bowling lanes and pinsetter machines that previously occupied the space, the 800-capacity venue will house concerts, weddings, dance parties, private events, fundraisers, markets, and, true to the spirit of Mahall’s, almost any other event that it’s creative patrons can think up. The update will also expand the amenities within Mahall’s, including a new full bar, gender neutral bathrooms and an ADA-accessible entrance on the east side of the building.

The renovation breathes new life into the space and will serve Mahall’s community in a myriad of ways, including new and exciting employment opportunities, improving the variety, safety, and quality of experiences for Mahall’s patrons, as well as increased offerings for larger groups and gatherings. With this, Mahall’s hopes to continue to attract creatives, artists, and musicians to the Birdtown neighborhood.

Pins & Needles

In 2022, Pins & Needles was founded in the former Locker Room of Mahall’s. Mirroring the historic 1924 bowling lanes, this 70s time capsule specializes in 70s classic cocktails, highballs, and your dad’s favorite beer. The space is aligned with relics of the 70s including old beer cans, signs, wood paneling checkered floors and a vinyl wall displaying the eras iconic albums.
